ESB International - Education

ESB International is committed to education in the community. As well as participating in ad-hoc school visits throughout the year and facilitating tours to our sites, we also run a number of educational initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of engineering and the environment.

Women in Engineering

This week-long education programme gives groups of female students an opportunity to see what life is like for women working as engineers, particularly in ESBI.

The programme aims to encourage female students to consider engineering as an option for their future careers. Over time, the programme has proven to play a vital role in helping female students decide to study engineering at third level. Find out more >>

Global Wind Day

Global Wind Day promotes the use of wind energy as a clean, efficient way of generating electricity and tackling climate change.

It was organised by the Global Wind Energy Council and the European Wind Energy Association and took place on 15 June 2009.

To celebrate Global Wind Day, ESB International opened Carnsore Point Wind Farm to the public for a day of educational talks, tours and fun-filled activities. Find out more >>

Future Power

ESB International runs this annual one-day educational event, together with Engineers Ireland's STEPS to Engineering programme. It encourages the children of ESB International staff to explore the world of science and engineering and consider engineering as a possible career choice.

Future Power is an action-packed day, with fun presentations and games designed to educate children about the world of engineering, design and technology.

The kids, ranging in ages from 12-16 years, learn about electricity and renewable energy. They also take part in practical engineering demonstrations and build models using K'NEX educational toys and games, with prizes awarded for the best K'NEX model. School Visits

ESBI's most recent school visit was the 'Fuels of the Future' themed Science and Engineering day hosted by Derrybrien National School, Galway on Friday 13th November 2009.

Over 150 children from Derrybrien National School, Moyglass National School, Ballinkill National School and Drim National School had the opportunity to discover how wind turbines are built, take a trip in an electric vehicle and experience, first hand, fuels of the future in this innovative Science and Engineering show.
