ESB Sustainability Strategy to 2020
The ESB board has approved a strategic framework with a €22 billion investment programme to 2020.
The main focus is on the sustainable and responsible use of scarce resources, leading to:
- The halving of our carbon emissions within 12 years;
- A carbon net-zero position by 2035.
About half the total €22 billion investment package will be devoted to Renewables through:
- Direct investments in renewable energy projects;
- Initiatives supporting sustainability such as smart metering and smart networks.
By 2020, ESB will:
- Deliver one-third of our electricity from renewable generation;
- Deliver over 1,400MW of wind generation (with over 100MW already installed);
- Exploit the potential of wave, tidal and biomass resources.
ESB Sustainability Initiatives
ESB International (ESBI) - Has engineering and consultancy resources dedicated to wind, as well as emerging ocean and solar technologies, to ensure the best potential technologies achieve commercial viability. We are committed to playing our part to harness over 6,000MW of potential ocean energy off the Irish coast.
ESBI is also participating in projects related to the latest energy and carbon technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), as well as investing, developing, financing and participating in greenhouse gas emission mitigation projects through ESBI Carbon Solutions.
ESB Networks Ltd. - Will invest €11 billion in vital infrastructure to facilitate the development of up to 6,000MW of generated power by every wind generator on the island of Ireland.
Power Generation - By 2020, ESB will be delivering one-third of its electricity from renewable generation, including wind power, wave, tidal and biomass energy.
Sustainable Networks - With smart metering, smart networks and more, ESB is helping to create a viable energy solution for the entire country - from our network, to your electrical devices at home.
Sustainable Fleet - By promoting research into electrical vehicles, biofuels and more, ESB is putting its sustainability promises to work - in our own operations, our commercial fleet, and beyond.
ESB Energy Services - A newly mobilised team at ESB tasked with researching, planning and delivering services and programmes that support Ireland's 20% energy reduction target by 2020 as identified in the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan. To date, ESB Energy Services has initiated two programmes:
- HIS, the Home Insulation Scheme;
- The HALO Home Energy Efficiency Programme.
