Staff Profile
- Name: Afra Ronayne
- Job title: Carbon Consultant
- Team name: ESBI Carbon Solutions
- Location: Dublin, Ireland
- Date joined: September 2004
What is your educational background?
In secondary school I took both physics and chemistry for my leaving certificate which I found very interesting and I also enjoyed maths. Since finishing secondary school my main education to date has been my Mechanical Engineering Degree in UCD.
What attracted you to ESBI?
I applied for a job in ESBI because I enjoyed the aspects of my engineering course that dealt with power engineering and I felt that ESBI would allow me to get involved in this area. I also liked the idea of working for an international company which would give me the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures.
How has your career developed since joining ESBI?
I started in ESBI in 2004 as a Graduate Engineer working in the power plant department. After I had completed the internal graduate training course I was able to take on more significant roles in the various projects and after 2 ½ years I progressed to Project Engineer within the power plant department. Throughout the past five years I have taken on more and more responsibility and I am now working as a Consultant Engineer in ESBI Carbon Solutions team.
What have been the highlights of your time in ESBI so far?
One of the highlights in my career in ESBI was when I travelled to China in April 2009 to attend a week-long conference on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The conference involved a number of delegates from Europe and China working together examining the latest developments in CCS technology.
Are there any further qualifications you have obtained since joining ESBI?
While working in ESBI I have completed a lot of internal technical training, attended many courses to improve my presentation / report writing skills, etc and I have also attended a number of external technical training courses. I have also had the opportunity to develop my skills through on-the-job training. More recently, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma course in Project Management in Trinity College.
What is the most rewarding thing about working with ESBI?
The most rewarding thing about working with ESBI is to be able to take on a lot of responsibility for a particular aspect of a project and then work together with the rest of the team to successfully finish the project.
What distinguishes ESBI for you?
ESBI provides me with a unique opportunity to travel, develop as an engineer and get involved in cutting-edge technology.
Can you give us a feel for the culture in ESBI?
The culture in ESBI is one where everyone works hard but there is also a strong social aspect. Because you are generally working as part of a team you get to know people quickly and everyone is very approachable. There is a good mix of people in the office, from inexperienced graduates to senior engineers, therefore there is an opportunity to learn from the rest of your team in an informal manner and then socialise with them too at the end of the week!
