Alistair Adair, Senior Architect with Building Consultancy Group in ESB International

What is your educational background?

Undergraduate Honours Degree in Architecture from Queens University Belfast, graduating 1996. Diploma in Architecture from University Glasgow, graduating 1999. Member Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.

What attracted you to ESBI?

Initially a recommendation from a former colleague. Following some research, I was attracted by the opportunity to broaden my skills within a multi-disciplinary practice. The interview clinched it as I was impressed with the interview panel and the quality of the work available.

How has your career developed since joining ESBI?

Following 5 years in private practice working primarily on developer led commercial projects I had skills established in that area.

I have since gained knowledge and experience within ESBI by working for new client types; primarily government & state agencies, on a variety of project types and scale.

I have been Project Lead on several of these projects, managing all aspects from inception through procurement and construction. I'd like to think that overall I am a more rounded individual since joining ESBI.

I am currently seconded to ESB Networks project managing the new HQ and Depot planned for Carrickmines. A new challenge - one that I am thoroughly enjoying and one that remains closely linked with ESBI.

What have been the highlights of your time in ESBI so far?

Err... presenting to 400+ colleagues at the ESBI Sustainability Conference!!!!

No seriously, there have been several highlights including designing a Regional Control Centre in Saudi Arabia for the National Electricity Company and being involved in the beautification of a Qatar substation in advance of the 2006 Asian Games. Both of these projects afforded me the opportunity to work in a different environment and culture albeit for a limited but most enjoyable time.

Are there any further qualifications you have obtained since joining ESBI?

Diploma In Project Management from Trinity College Dublin, graduating 2006.

What is the most rewarding thing about working with ESBI?

It's been said before; the people. I really can't say enough about the people in ESBI. There is an attitude of wanting to get things done; problem solving not making. I have met very few people who do not follow this formula.

As an Architect I have enjoyed the opportunity through ESBI to work throughout Ireland, from Letterkenny to Cork as well as closer to home. I enjoy my time on site during the construction process, solving problems and watching things take shape. There is immense satisfaction watching the lines on paper become shapes and spaces. Positive feedback is the added bonus.

It is evident that commitment and ability are recognised and like everything, the more you put in, the more you get out. The biggest reward for me is job satisfaction.

What distinguishes ESBI for you?

Good people, a broad skill base, and a great reputation.

Can you give us a feel for the culture in ESBI?

Fairness and respect are the words that spring to mind. These help establish a strong sense of community within the organisation with an emphasis on teamwork and project delivery. The business is reliant on its staff and this is recognised.

ESBI promotes a healthy work life balance; healthy minds, bodies and all that. Numerous team building as well as sports and social outings run throughout the year catering for all tastes.

In addition, yearly performance objectives are set and staff are involved in the process upon which their careers can develop. Feedback is sought and lessons learnt. Continued education is offered by way of structured courses but also by informal 'Lunch and Learn' lectures where staff can find out what is going on in other areas of the business.
