Staff Profile
- Name: Deirdre Newell
- Job title: Environmental Consultant
- Team name: Environment Group
- Business line:ESBI Engineering
- Location: Dublin, Ireland
- Date joined: October 1997
What is your educational background?
I am a graduate of Civil Engineering from NUI, Galway.
What attracted you to ESBI?
From my graduation in 1995 to 1997 I was working with a small surveying company and although I enjoyed the work and the travel throughout Ireland that was involved, I wanted to broaden my experience and relished the opportunity to travel internationally for ESBI.
How has your career developed since joining ESBI?
I began work in ESBI in the Environment Group, carrying out surveying work at ESB Power Stations as part of Environmental Management Systems for the Stations.
I moved on to implementing Environmental Management Systems and then to leading and managing small and then larger projects within the Environment Group. I recently moved from the group to become Manager of the Project Management Office. This role involves support, facilitation and project assurance with respect to the project management activities of large capital generation projects being undertaken by the ESB Group.
What have been the highlights of your time in ESBI so far?
As a keen Galway GAA supporter, I thoroughly enjoyed my involvement in the Cúl Green initiative, a joint initiative between the ESB and the GAA aimed at promoting energy efficiency and making Croke Park Stadium Carbon Neutral.
I was based at Croke Park for 12 months managing the investigations into potential renewable and alternative energy solutions for the Stadium and implementation of energy efficiency and other environmental management measures.
Are there any further qualifications you have obtained since joining ESBI?
In 2001, I completed a H. Dip in Project Management at Trinity College. I have also kept up-to-date with the advancements in environment related technologies, developments in legislation and developments in environmental management by attending seminars, courses and on-the-job training provided by ESBI.
What is the most rewarding thing about working with ESBI?
The wide variety of opportunities for staff, the value the company places on their staff and the challenging environment I work in.
What distinguishes ESBI for you?
As a Civil Engineer who has worked mostly in the environmental field, ESBI presented me with the opportunity to work on a huge variety of projects and in very interesting parts of the world. There are not many companies that I am aware of that offer these opportunities. I have worked on projects in the UK, Spain, Moldova and Vietnam on behalf of ESBI.
Can you give us a feel for the culture in ESBI?
There is a strong team spirit not just in terms of project teams, but also with regard to sports and social events.
