- Date joined: April 2007
What is your educational background?
I completed a Certificate and Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in the Institute of Technology Carlow in 2003. I then completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in Dublin Institute of Technology, Bolton Street, where I graduated in 2005.
What attracted you to ESBI?
When I joined ESBI in 2007, I had two years' experience in both the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. I joined ESBI because of its reputation and high standard in excellence. I wanted to take my career a step further and it seemed like an attractive opportunity. I had also been talking to several people who had either worked for or were still working for ESBI and they thoroughly recommended ESBI as one of the leading companies to be associated with.
How has your career developed since joining ESBI?
I joined ESBI as a Graduate Engineer and I worked as part of a small specialised team working on design projects, feasibility studies and general engineering works for ESBI power plants as well as several ESB Power Generation power stations.
Throughout the two and half years I have been with ESBI, the Power Plant team has developed and grown from five people to twelve people with a wide variety of work and projects. I was subsequently promoted to Professional Engineer and became a Line Manager with three direct reports.
In July 2009, I was asked if I would take the position of Mechanical Supervisor in Kulim Power Plant, Malaysia, which I duly accepted. As a Mechanical Supervisor I am responsible for the mechanical maintenance activities on site, outage planning and for the technical and personal development of the seven people who report to me.
What have been the highlights of your time in ESBI so far?
One of the highlights would have to be the travel and the places which I have been to. I have got to meet many different cultures in those countries whilst performing my duties. Some of the countries which I have been fortunate to work in are Spain, Norway, Germany, Pakistan, and Malaysia.
Are there any further qualifications you have obtained since joining ESBI?
I plan to start a part-time Masters in Mechanical Engineering or similar when I finish my assignment in Malaysia.
I have also completed many different courses in design, safety and IT which aid me in my everyday duties.
Can you tell us about your overseas experience?
My first overseas experience occurred when I was only a couple of months in ESBI. I was asked if I would witness a blade clearance inspection for a V94.2 Gas Turbine in Siemens Berlin, Germany. I was a bit apprehensive at first as I saw myself only as a young engineer and I would be discussing items relating to Gas Turbines with people who had twenty years plus experience. I gained a vast amount of information from that experience as I got to see the complete Gas Turbine assembly as well as partly assembled machines on the workshop floor.
In the past year, I have been to several of the ESBI O&M Solutions' plants to carry out a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) on the plants. As a result I visited Amorebieta (Spain), Rousch (Pakistan), Kulim (Malaysia) and other power plants in Ireland.
I was recently in Rousch (Pakistan) to carry out a review of the Gas Turbine Air Filtration System for ESBI O&M Solutions. This involved going to site and reviewing the filtration system, reviewing documentation and submitting a report.
I have also been to many European countries for meetings, seminars and training courses.
What did you gain most from working overseas?
I feel that I have a gained a lot, both on a professional level but also on a personal level. I am grateful that I got the opportunity to meet and work with so many different people and cultures in such as small space of time while I have been working in ESBI.
What is the most rewarding thing about working with ESBI?
The most rewarding thing would have to be the recognition of the work that we do, the variety of work and the support that we get from both work colleagues and senior management.
What distinguishes ESBI for you?
One of the most outstanding features would have to be ESBI's excellent attitude to Health & Safety of both their personnel and the Contractors who work on their sites.
ESBI also has excellent career development paths for its employees which you can take further and enhance your skills in whatever direction you would like to take.
