ESBI engineers Neil McDonagh and William Phang have been awarded the prize for Best Conference Paper at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Conference on Developments in Power System Protection which took place in Manchester earlier this month. The three day conference featured 155 papers and was attended by over 300 delegates from more than 20 countries.

The winning paper, entitled Use of Faulted Phase Earthing using a Custom Built Earth Fault Controller, outlines a new method of system operation for electrical networks (patented by ESB Networks) which reduces loss of supply to customers resulting from network faults. A project to implement this system is currently being carried out by ESB Networks, spear-headed by project manager Martin Hand. ESBI's Power Systems Studies (PSS) group is providing engineering expertise to the project.

Neil McDonagh from ESBI who presented the paper said, "Given the scale of this event, it is a genuine honour that our paper was selected for the award. The challenge for us was to communicate the very complex work carried out by ESBI for ESB Networks in a way that engaged delegates at the conference and advanced understanding among our industry colleagues."

Commenting further, Ollie Brogan, Manager of ESBI Engineering Solutions said, "ESBI personnel have a long tradition of contributing at technical conferences. To be selected for this award from such a prestigious line up of international speakers reflects both the breadth of knowledge within ESBI and the ability of our staff to communicate authoritatively on their areas of expertise."
