Milestone reached in Tanzania

ESB International News - May 2010

The US-Government funded Millennium Challenge Account Tanzania (MCA-T) has awarded a contract for the installation of a new 132kV submarine inter-connector from mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar Island and associated works to Japanese power cable company, Viscas Corporation.

The installation of the cable and associated electric power line is part of an extensive energy project in Tanzania funded by MCA-T that ESB International (ESBI) has been working on since 2008 as consulting engineer and EPC construction supervisor. In this role, ESBI undertook the initial detailed survey work and compiled the technical information, specifications and schedules for the international competitive tender which led to the contract award to Viscas Corporation. ESBI also provided technical expertise in the evaluation of the bids and during contract negotiations. Now that a contractor has been appointed ESBI will be the construction supervisor for the duration of the project.

The contract signing marks a very significant milestone for the MCA-T energy project, particularly as Zanzibar has experienced major problems with its electricity supply over recent months, which has greatly affected its tourist industry.
