ESBI has been involved in wave and tidal energy development for the last 30 years. Our services have expanded as the technologies reach pre-commercial and commercial stages of development.

Our Commitment to Ocean Energy

Central to ESB's Strategic Framework toward 2020 is investment in renewable energy. Core objectives are halving carbon emissions within 12 years, and achieving a carbon net-zero position by 2035.

ESB also has a target of owning 150MW of generation from the emerging area of wave and tidal energy in its portfolio by 2020.

ESBI Ocean Energy was established to position ESBI to deliver on this ambitious target.

Supporting Wave and Tidal Energy Projects

ESBI Ocean Energy supports the development of the ocean energy sector in Ireland. We are working with and supporting state agencies involved in promoting the sector and with other parts of ESB/ESBI involved in sustainability. ESBI also support research and development through funding a variety of University projects.

ESBI's ocean energy developments are focused on:

  • Gaining technical expertise in wave and tidal technologies through technology support agreements
  • Identifying potential wave and tidal sites in Ireland, the UK and other targeted countries in EU
  • Investing in wave and tidal projects in Ireland.
  • Preparing studies and offer consultancy services in the initial project phases.
