Introduction

One of the core objectives of our parent company ESB's Strategic Framework to 2020 is to develop an integrated Generation, Trading and Supply portfolio that will compete successfully as the increasingly competitive market in Ireland integrates with the energy market in Great Britain under the direction of the EU's Regional Electricity Market initiative.

To this end, ESBI's primary investment focus is on the deregulated, competitive British energy market. Additional electrical interconnection between Ireland and Britain will lead to the evolution of an All Islands electricity market by 2020 and further investment in power projects in the UK affords ESBI the opportunity to deliver growth in a neighbouring market of strategic importance.

Since entering the British market in 1992 with the development of one of the first independent power plants after privatisation, Corby Power Ltd, ESBI now owns nearly 1400MW of gas-fired and wind assets in the UK, employing 100 people in generation-related activities, and is currently poised to develop a 860MW gas-fired plant near Manchester. ESBI is developing a generation portfolio in Britain of the order of 3,000MW over the next decade, in addition to its existing assets.
